UK ratings seem to be holding steady in the 6.5-7 million overnight, 8+ million overall with timeshifting. I’m still trying to find American ratings for “The Beast Below”. “Victory of the Daleks” is currently #2 at iTunes US.
Next up in the US is the return of the Weeping Angels – “The Time of Angels”… should be great!

YEAH! I watched the episode this afternoon and immediately thought…wonder when the next podcast will be up! You boys are on top of it. Niiiice going.
Ya’ll are HARSH! “;) “A strong failure”? I admit being simple and pretty easy to please when it comes to DW, but I am thinking it was ok. It might be weak and a throw away episode (clearly it’s a set up for future Dalek episodes). It wasn’t the worst.
I am starting to warm up to Matt Smith since in this episode it seemed like he wasn’t trying so hard to be DT. They did take the subject (the Blitz) a little light. And the relationship between The Doctor and Churchill was a little too slap stick for sure.
But let’s get to details. Thanks for the (sort of) explanation of St. Johns Ambulance. But why that now? It’s from the movie but…so? and? Why? or is it just something to make die hard fans smile?
I never realized it until now. Wow, Amy is TALL (i don’t dig her wardrobe but I am sure you boys didn’t mind). And I appreciate the idea of new (improved?) Daleks. The Kitchenaid colors are too much. But I howled at the soldier having a utility belt and “would you like some tea?” LOL! but I think that they are a lot more imposing and the voice is actually menacing. You have to admit that the old models were getting less and less believable (and yes I know that it’s part of the old DW schtick). The wheelie bin with a plunger? Hardly a galactic menace. No one was going to buy that much further. The idea that they have different roles, personalities, etc…could come to something. I’ll give ‘em a pass on that. we’ll see…
The scene where they save everyone from a Dalek suicide bomber (which I thought was sort of clever) because love makes us human not the pain we endure…that made up for a lot in this episode and again she saves the day. Again with the Scottish cracks. I like the inside jokes-that’s classic DW stuff.
THE CRACK…not subtle but admit it that you smiled and went “aha”. Weeping Angels. I AM ON THE EDGE. YEAAAAAAAH! oh yeah. Bring It.
Well, if I read your post correctly, you didn’t really like it much, either. It sounds like we agree on the awesome scene at the end with Amy. I don’t mind the redesign of the Daleks, and this seems clearly to be a transitional ep for the Daleks. That said, it still was my least favorite of the reboot by far, and I feel comfortable with the score.
Angels should fare better for us all next week!
I don’t know what made me laugh louder, Dalek Skittles or the worlds worst Mexican standoff. I was so disappointed with this episode myself. But you guys show no mercy.
From this day on, every time I see the colorful Dalek’s I will think “Taste the Rainbow”, thank you John!
My commentary is limited here because I basically agree with everything both of you both said with the exception that I preferred “Fear Her” to “Victory of the Daleks” by far. It was weak yes, but not as weak as VotD. I also agree with the overall panning of the portrayal of Churchill as too slapstick (was it the actor or the script?). Really he almost came across as buffoon rather than one of the greatest leaders that history has ever seen.
The Doctor’s “I’M THE DOCTOR, YOU’RE THE DALEKS” meltdown and the last 5 minutes were basically the best of the episode though I also got a big chuckle out of “I was told there would be tea” in the Jammie Dodger scene.
This may sound a bit crazy but Amy reminds me of Donna in many ways. Donna was so very, very human and it was the very thing that saved the Doctor (literally as we later found out). Amy has that same quality, she wears her humanity on her sleeve and has shown it in BB and VotD and I think as time goes on with this very dark Doctor, we’ll see just how much it’s needed.
Cyn, I like your comparison of Amy to Donna – it IS her humanity which is the key element and what the Doctor needs… and probably why he likes Humans so much!
Let’s just be glad that weak eps like VotD are so VERY few and far-between. We aren’t due another one until Season 8 or so!
